Standard wheel. It sits a little loose and rattles up a storm whenever the hamster runs in it. I went and pushed on a 3/8 inch washer on the end of the spindle, which makes the wheel snug enough that it doesn't rattle anymore, but loose enough to spin fairly well (it doesn't spin quite as freely as it would without the washer). I wish this was made better, though, so you didn't have to resort to aftermarket fixes. Surely, the 10 cents it cost for the maker to get the plastic pieces could be doubled to 20 cents to fix the rattle in the design and manufacturing process.Read Best Reviews of Super Pet CritterTrail Snap-On Comfort Wheel Here
My hamster completely ignores the wheel attached to the side of his cage, so I purchased this in hopes he'd find it at the end of a tunnel. The design is great. It's enclosed, so the hamster can move about freely without the risk of falling out. The wheel is solid, with no bars for tiny feet to get caught or hurt. Hampton (the hamster) loves running in it and will go with great speed. It's relatively quiet, which is really nice for an active hamster. However, the sound level is dependent upon the hamster "traveling" in the wheel alone. Too often, Hampton would place bits of food and seeds in the wheel.Since hamsters intuitively seek out places to hoard their food, the design is a bit flawed. It's too easy for the critter to see the wheel at the end of a tunnel as a massive storage facility for food. Every time I tried using the wheel at the end of the tunnel, Hampton would use it for awhile as intended, but then he'd move on to storing food in it. The wheel is enclosed, but there's just enough space between the lip of the wheel and its containment "lid" that smaller seeds will often fall between the crack and scatter about the outside of the cage. Very messy.
I'd much rather seek out a wheel on a stand that the hamster will intuitively climb into and start to run. In the unlikely event that he'd attempt to store food there, at least it would be contained within the cage.I really like a lot about this wheelthe size is great for my hamster, it attaches great to my cage, and i like the cup underneath that catches his seeds and poo. The one thing that bothers me, however, is the constant squeaking! Even when I put vegetable oil in the center connection, there is ALWAYS a squeak, and sometimes its so loud that I can't see how my hamster can stand it.
