The first time the cat jumped up on the scratch pad "deck" of the castle, the whole thing collapsed. I had to reinforce the whole thing with thin strips of wood.

Yes! My cat is another cat that jumped on the Planet Petco Cityscape Cat Scratcher and collapsed it. Mind you, this kitty is a lightweight at 5.5 lbs. Sometimes there is no turning back once assembling these poorly made things. And that is what happened to me--I kept assembling until it was all put together. I called the cat to give it a test. She loves playing in cardboard boxes and loves to use cardboard scratchers. I saw the delight in her face as she took a jump to the top level and then I saw the building fall down and the cat leave in disgust. Don't bother trying to use the lame decorative stickers that come with it to help stick it back together because they fall off and those that have not fallen off are being removed by the cat who for some odd reason wants to eat them. I will mend and prop this back together but when it is worn out will not replace it with another. I learned my le$$on. I'd rather make my own next time around. It could have been a plain old box from around the house that I fitted with a cardboard scratcher and she'd be the happiest cat on earth. I doubt very much that kitty Sophia notices it is a "cityscape".
