Fat Cat Catfisher Fishing Rod and Reel with 2 Catnip Lures

Fat Cat Catfisher Fishing Rod and Reel with 2 Catnip LuresMy cats LOVE this toy. But in the span of 2 days, I had to return 3 of them because they kept breaking. This product is a total piece of junk. But there is hope!

Solution: Buy a child's fishing reel those plastic ones with characters on them (maybe 10 bucks, max) and the replacement Catfisher Lures, or any sort of catnip mouse. Attach catnip mouse to child's fishing reel, and enjoy. Our Finding Nemo children's reel has lasted over a year, and we have to hide it when we aren't playing!

This is a great cat toy, but there is a design flaw. When reeling the mouse back in, the line can very easily get tangled inside the handle or completely miss the reel. However, there is a secret to using it successfully. The only thing you have to do is hold the line at the opening of the cat's mouth as you reel in the lure; just let the line go between your fingere gently pressed together. That way the line is not curled as it enters the handle, which is what causes the problem. My cat got this from Santa Claus several years ago, and it is till going strong. GOOD LUCK!

I only spent $10 on this at my local Pet Expo, and it wasn't even worth that. My cats got to play with it for about 10 minutes, then the line tangled up, snapped, and now I can't get it back together. Definitely not worth more than maybe $3.00. The saddest part is that your animal will LOVE it, and then sit next to you on the couch watching you try to fix it for 2 hours. Do NOT buy this product, get a children's pole instead and just tie a toy to the end.

First off, I am writing this in response to all of the negatives about the toy breaking. My girlfriend came home with one of these toys about a week back. My cat loves this toy!

We use this thing a lot. The other day, the line tangled up. And like an idiot I kept trying to reel it in which made the problem worse. But here's the thing. Even if the line gets completely tangled inside, you can just take the reel apart. Take the plastic top off. Then remove the nut on top of the metal top inside. That's it. Now the tangled line is exposed when you remove that metal lid. Now the simple solution is just cut the line below the tangle. Remove the tangled line. Now put the metal lid back on. Reinstall the nut on top. Feed the good line from the bottom up through the plastic reel top. Then secure the plastic top. Then feed the line through the rod loops and then after the line is through the last loop at the end of the pole, tie the line to the cat lure toy. That's it done, fixed, voila. This may sound like a lot but it's not that bad. Took me literally a couple of minutes. Oh and I have never restrung a fishing reel before but I watched a quick video tutorial on YouTube and saw how easy it was. This reel is just like the real ones so restraining it is the same.

I think the real reason why this thing may get tangled is because if you real it in so fast with out any tension on the line, the line is loose and so it reels back in loose which over time can cause tangles. Think about it. When you are really fishing, you have the tension of the water on the line and if you have caught a fish the line goes taught as you reel it in. That's just my two cents. I'll enjoy the toy with my cat. A quick 2 minutes on YouTube saved me from bad mouthing the company and trips to the store. I guess I'm just a why person and like to fix things. Hope this helps anyone with this problem.

Overall, I rate this a 4. My cat loves it.

My cats are crazy over this toy. The secret to it's not getting tangled is to reel the line in while your index finger and the finger next to it are holding the line between as you reel the line in. Giving the line a tiny bit of gentle tension this way is real fisherman's secret to wheel casting that I learned from my fisherman husband. If you do not keep tension on the line it will tangle quickly, as this is simply the nature of the beast of this style of reel which is called a "Zebco Reel."

There will be other but infrequent times when the line just decides to act up,and it will tangle anyway. When the reel gets tangled, you then have to pull apart the outer casing, and pull out the inner spring-ed line reel, and as you keep gently keep it pulled out from the casing by a bit of needed pressure, unwind the line until it begins to move freely from the reel of line itself, instead of from inside the casing where it got snared up. When the line is moving freely from the lilne reel itself, you then re-wind the unwound line around the line reel where it belongs. Keep everyone way away while you doing this detangling, or the line will become snared up on someone or some thing, and become impossible mess.

A challenge for true, but it's a jewel of a toy, and if you follow these directions you can keep it in good shape. If you know a real fisherman, they can give you a visual. Some kitty toys are worth it my cat says this is one of them, and my husband gives me the patience and wisdom to use it! This is the only cat toy that will lure our cat up from the basement when we need to get her out, so very worth the bother for that reason, and for her own fun and joy too!
