Procone Soft Recovery Collar in Navy

I just recieved this collar and put it on my cat. He is NOT happy with it, but it's perfect for my needs.

Some information on sizing from the included insert:

SMALL is for neck measuring 8 to 12 inches

MEDIUM is 12 to 15 inches.

LARGE is 15 to 18 inches

X-LARGE is 23 inches

XX-LARGE is coming soon.

My rather large older cat is doing fine with a SMALL.

The material is both soft and strong, much like the material you see in outdoors equipment. The ribs are sturdy and keep it in place and the velcro is quality and fastens strongly. This is a high quality recovery collar, and worth every penny. I was very impressed by it, since I've tried to use the cheaper varieties with little luck.

My only complaint was uncertainty on sizing when I ordered, and I hope this review will help you with that. The makers do tell you that, if not sure, order one size up to be safe.

Incidently the included collar is heavy nylon with strong velcro fasteners and good quality D rings. The protective outer collar is also rather large (long) so it really protects the face as well as making licking the body hard to impossible.

I am very pleased with my purchase of the Contech Procone. It worked great for my dog after her surgery. She had it on continuously for two weeks after she was spayed. The pliability of the material allowed her to snuggle up with us, rest her head, and access her food and water dishes without ever being able to access her stitches. She didn't like the contraption, but was as content as a post-operative dog with itchy stitches and a giant cone around her head could be. This was more affordable than the plastic shame cone offered at my Vet's office and I'm super pleased with its efficacy. In response to another review, I did not notice any particular odor or smell. The cone is washable and we have continued to use it after our dog has healed from surgery to assist us in grooming her nails and brushing her teeth more easily, making it an even more valuable investment.

I have a young Jack Russell Terrier who, for whatever reason, is prone to getting hot spots on his neck every six months or so. At first we would just re-use the hard plastic cone we got from the vet when he was fixed to keep him from scratching at himself, but eventually it dawned on us that perhaps that was only exacerbating the problem rather than helping. Not only was it obviously uncomfortable for him, but it was very loud and scraped against every inch of floor and wall he walked past.

Then I discovered the ProCone, which I was somewhat skeptical about. It looked kind of flimsy and almost too flexible, which of course would defeat the purpose of the whole thing if he could still reach himself, and it was incredibly expensive. (As of this writing, the average price on Amazon is only about 1/3 of what I paid retail. I wish I did my research first!) BUT it didn't take long to realize it was worth the investment. Gone are the sharp plastic edges digging into his neck; instead it fastens in much the same way a regular Velcro collar would, which he doesn't mind at all. The cone part itself is also adjustable with a series of Velcro strips so finding a comfortable fit shouldn't be too difficult. My fears about it being flimsy were unfounded, as the fabric is reinforced and actually quite sturdy, but does have a certain "give" which allows him to still go through the doggie door by himself and sleep soundly while wearing it. It does not restrict eating or drinking in any way, and he can play with our other much larger dog with no issue. If I had to make one minor complaint, it's that, because there is so much Velcro involved, stray hair and lint tend to gather and clump up in certain spots which can look a little gross after a while, but a little effort from the owner can keep it looking nice. Plus, it is machine washable.

Overall, a great purchase that suits all our needs, the first and foremost being the comfort of the dog himself. And as hot spots tend to be a recurring problem for us, I imagine it will be a product that will come in handy over and over again.

I felt so bad for my dog when she was sent home from the vet with one of those huge stiff cones. The jolts from her bumping into everything were quite honestly frightening for her and me! Plus they needed to shave her neck for the surgery and within 24 hours she developed terrible sores, I was heartbroken for her.

But then I bought this soft collar and it's LITERALLY night and day. She and I ate both incredibly happy with this product. Here are just a few reasons why it's amazing:

1) It's SOFT. My dog had a tumor removed from her head and had her ear reattached. This collar allows her to sleep on the incisions without pain and it "molds" to her head allowing BOTH of us to sleep peacefully. As I'm writing this, she's spread out asleep and snoring next to me.

2) It stays in place. This fabulous collar doesn't fall down or come loose to the point where I need to constantly readjust it. Plus, it doesn't lay itself on top of her head where her incisions are like the other hard cones do. I SO appreciate that! I'm sure she does as well.

3) It's EASY to put on. This has three strips of velcro which makes it incredibly easy to put on by myself. Prior to having this, it took two of us to get that horrible cone on, and my poor girl would get anxious and nervous. And the Velcro actually stays in place, there's no way she can get this off by herself.

4) It folds under the chin so that food and water don't create a mess inside. I keep it folded all the time, although other people may not want to if the affected area can be reached with the dog/cat's mouth exposed like this. But for our purpose, this is perfect.

5) It doesn't stop her in her tracks when she bumps into objects. It's flexible enough that it only slows her down a bit while she manages her way around. With the other hard cone, she would be jolted and stuck until I came and helped her. She can also jump up on my bed without the stiff cone stopping her. Before I got this, I had to pick her up every time she wanted to get anywhere.

I'm sure there are many great features that I'm missing, but this has quite literally been a lifesaver. Her incisions are healing nicely and I have no doubt it's because she's much happier and more comfortable in this soft collar. I would recommend this to anyone and this will be my first purchase if someone I know has a pet who needs to wear a cone/collar. Thank you from myself and Lexi for this great product!!
