We read the review on the Kong Safestix and were concerned that our dogs might chew them into pieces and ingest the sharp remains--a very serious issue. However, I also saw a glowing review on the Original Safestix and know that it is recommended by Leerburg. I checked further and discovered that the two products are exactly the same; the two companies collaborated and now offer new sizes and colors. I ordered one of each size of the Kong Safestix and so far am very pleased with them. We do NOT use them as chew toys; the dogs never have them, or most other toys, unsupervised. Toys are for interaction and training with us. Both dogs love chasing them, bringing one back to get another, tugging, etc. So far the plastic isn't even scratched by teeth. Our adult dog is a chewer so it's a pretty good test, but the foster Malinois puppy will prove the point when she gets her full set of adult teeth in a couple of months. Mals have a mouth full of carpet knives, and if our Safestix stands up to her at that point they will have fully proven themselves to me. Still...supervised play only. That's what the manufacturer clearly recommends and I plan to adhere to that rule.

UPDATE: We have had trouble getting the foster puppy to bring back toys to be thrown again or to "trade" one toy for a similar/identical one. These are skills we are asked by the military foster coordinators to teach the puppies to prepare them for military training when they come back at 7 months of age. The good news is that Hharpy WILL bring one of these Safestix to us either to play tug or trade for another one. In addition, this morning, for the first time, she returned her Kong to me after chasing after it so that I could throw it for her again. For some reason this new, favorable response occurred when we introduced Safestix to our play and training routine. This is a breakthrough for her and hopefully she will generalize the behaviors to even more objects. It's obvious that both dogs love these toys. Safestix encourage interactive play in our dogs and also advance their training.

The video shows how we use the SafeStix to exercise the military foster puppy in the pool. They float high and are easy for her to find and bring back. We have her retrieve all three sizes in the pool and on the ground. Neither this puppy or our own big chewer have put so much as a scratch on these toys. We use them every day, several times usually, in and out of the water. The dogs love them for retrieving and tugging. They are not left with the dogs but are part of training and interactive play. I highly recommend Safestix for those purposes.

I was looking for something my power chewer that would last more than a few minutes. My dog is female and only about 50lbs, so I purchased the pink one.

Pros: She hasn't even managed to put a scratch in it. She can play tug with our other dog and still be far enough away that they aren't nose to nose.

Con: The only downside to this toy is that the pink one is considerably inappropriate looking. I didn't notice when I first bought it, but my husband and several visitors made lurid comments when they saw it on the floor. As my home office is a public one, and I often leave the connecting doors open, I have to move it out of sight each day.

I suggest you buy any color except the pink one to avoid uncomfortable moments when family comes to visit.

There was no break-in time for FUN with this toy. My Aussie immediately understood that this toy was the KEY TO HER HAPPINESS.

It is well made and easy for her to grab and play tug-of-war with. It throws terrific too. No more breaking sticks in her mouth. This is safe and bright in color to locate in the taller grass. I can't wait to use it at the lake as it is supposed to float. I LOVE THIS PRODUCT!

My dogs love to chew sticks and I thought this would be safer as advertised. I have several other kong products and they are basically indistructable. This product however is very poor. They advertise that it is braided to promote chewing and then when you get the package it states it is not a chew too. What's the point then? If it's supposed to be safer than chewing a stick you would think your dog could chew it. My dog distroyed this thing in 2 bites. It breaks into a bunch of pieces very easily and is not made of the normal Kong rubber material. Kong should just make a stick out of their regular tough rubber material.

I have two golden retrievers. They love this toy. Sometimes they play tug of war with it. Very durable as they usually chew through anything. I did purchase the large stick, however I think the medium one would have been a better choice. The large one is just that, and when they walk around with it in their mouths they knock things over or whack you in the back of the legs with it.
