HDP Car Harness Dog Safety Seat Belt Gear Travel System

Bought these items at local major pet supply store separately because they weren't offering the harness and buckle as a single unit as offered here. The buckle went for $12 alone and the harness another $8. I later found the set online for $9.99 and bought 3. These buckles are just as durable and well made (if not better) than safetybelts found in vehicles for people. The metal clips seem as strong as those used by rockclimbers whose lives depend on such solid equipment. The part that buckles into safetybelts fit both old (1998) and new (2006) saftebelts, Ford and Dodge were tested and the design is a sturdy, concise fit. I know my pets are safe and secure on car rides, no risk of jumping out or escape when the doors are opened. Great product! The clip that attaches the strap (which fits into the seatbelt) to the harness is very poorly designed, and extremely dangerous. Instead of using a standard clip, like you would find at the end of almost any leash on the market, the makers of this product used what looks like a small carabineer clip to attach the strap to the harness. One of my dogs managed to get her leg caught in the clip, with the clip snapped shut around the tendon running along the back of her leg (not sure how this happened, as we were driving at the time, all I know is my dog suddenly started panicking and thrashing in the back seat with this clip which was still attached to the harness closed over her back leg like a bear-trap). Fortunately we were able to pull off of the freeway, calm her down and very carefully remove the clip from around her leg (which was difficult to do and would have been impossible for my dog to do herself, because of the shape of the clip) before she tore the tendon in her leg.

This design might not pose much of a risk if you're dog sits perfectly still in your car, or if you don't mind tightening the strap so much that your dog cannot move or reposition itself, but I would not recommend this product to anyone. I have since removed the original clip and replaced it with a standard clip so that I can continue to use the seatbelt adaptor at the other end of the strap.

I have two mini dachshunds and this restraint works great. It keeps them secure in the seat should I have to stop quickly. One of my girls, is a little bit feisty and Maggie got out of their seat while I was driving. When I stopped at the light, I got out of my front seat, opened the back door and Ms. Maggie was as quick as a flash and jumped out of the car...there was traffic there...fortunately, I called to her and she listened and got her back in the car. I immediately started looking for restraints. I bought two of them and embroidered their names on them...they are working out great. Study construction, strong clip to secure them to the seat belt or in my case, these are really mini dachshunds, so I have a coupler that I attach to their car seat and I secure the harness to it...both the girls are in their seat securely. That make me happy because I know they are safe.

I recently purchased this item for my chihuahua so she could safely travel to the beach with me and my family. I purchased the Small/Medium because it states that it fits 12-28 girth but this information is incorrect. My dog is a 16 and when the harness is shortened as small as it will go, it is still too big for her. I would recommend anyone with a smaller animal to order the xtra small version that I found on Amazon.com after I purchased this one. The X-Small states that it fits animals up to 18 so I think it would have been a better fit. Overall though, it is a sturdy piece of equipment and the buckle works wonderfully.

When I received the product, the box included a notice that the item would not work with certain cars. This was not announced on the website. Furthermore, I own a '91 Jeep Wrangler, and it doesn't work with it. This was not mentioned in the box, either.
