Green Pet Self Cooling Pet Pad

The Green Pet Shop Self Cooling Pet Pad, SmallAfter purchasing our second extra large cool pad in a month, please be aware that the covering for the pad is fatally flawed. After just three weeks, small cracks developed in the cover on both sides.

Our retailer replaced the cool pad and within a week the second cool pad cover was showing signs of wear including another long crack.

Our 76 pound golden loves the pad, but it is clear that the material used to cover the pad is not adequate to handle normal usage of a large dog.

We assumed that since the cool pad is sold without an additional cover that the covering was capable of handling large dogs.

It is not.

In our opinion this very expensive pad, while a great idea, simply needs to have a much tougher cover.

Large dog owners should be very cautious if you purchase is for a large dog.

I have had a LARGE size pet Cool Pad from the Green Pet Shop (PetShopUSA storefront is cheaper) for my (long-haired) senior American Eskimo Dog for about one month now for $45 including shipping. I had to sadly give up on his water bed after 7 years, because it was on it's third leak, and this time it affected my downstairs neighbor's ceiling ..yikes. I was sad to see it go, and out of guilt, I ordered a conventional dog bed (Cesar brand), that didn't work out for him unfortunately. It has a gel-tec type top pad, that mimics gel-filled cells, but was lumpy and just not right for a medium to small dog, although it has an egg crate foam layer, which can be separated out, and will work for the winter. I did some more looking online and took a chance on the Cool Pad, after reading a couple reviews, and precious else to go on. I notice now that there is a nominal YouTube video promotion, if you search online. I have to say that I could be more pleased with the Cool Pad! He was tentative about it at first, but it's become his favorite spot now. I keep a folded blanket underneath and usually have a floor fan going, which helps to maximize hot weather benefits. I wanted to keep him away from the vinyl-covered concrete slab kitchen and bathroom floors, that he gravitated towards before I got the water bed, and most especially now that he's 15.5 years old, has had advanced liver cancer and Cushings Disease for a year and a half (not expected to live past 5 months at the time), but is doing great in spite of it all. Since I keep his Cool Pad permanently in the bedroom, I decided to get him one for the living area as well and/or for nominal travel, as they are easy to stowe and to move around. I got the second pad in this afternoon, and he's already taken to it. I can actually feel the pad get cooler as I press on it with my hand or foot. It's not a huge cooling difference, but much more than I expected, and at least as good as the water bed in picking up and retaining a room's ambient air temperature. My fear is that the other reviewer, may be experiencing less dramatic results because her dog weighs less. I have to say that this bed is no miracle, but one of the best cooling pet bed products on the market for price, effectiveness, and practicality. It's cool, not cold, as the other buyer expected, and would of course be ideal, but it's not realistic. You can easily fold it along the creased lines into about 1 square foot by a few inches high, and freeze it (gently I would suggest), or refrigerate it for a more dramatic short term effect. It has the look and feel of a blue cold pack for the freezer/fridge. You can actually go to The Green Pet Shop and order a $1-sample square of the product too. It's not going to be for everybody, but it's worth it in terms of comfort and cushioning especially at this late stage in my old friend's life. My 2 cents.

I ordered this product for my Keeshond who doesn't tolerate the heat very well. She needed some encouragement to try it out, but once she did she stayed for a long nap. She seems very comfortable using this pad and I'm glad I bought it. The size (large) was perfect for her and for my male English Springer Spaniel. I may be purchasing another one for him. This pad does not make the floor or the dog damp as did other pads I've used in the past. Outer material seems very durable and easily washable too.

I am a huge believer in this product. My senior Golden needed the support of his orthopedic bed, but it always made him hot and he'd he go lay on the closet patch of cold, hard tile to cool off, which is not ideal for his joints. We found the perfect compromise with this product, as the coolness lures him onto his bed, and once it activates on touch with the cooling effect, he settles in for the entire night on his supportive bed. The best part is that he settles in so well that he stays on it for many hours in a row. After 3-4 hours, the pad actually warms up in correspondence to his body temperature, which is a great benefit to his arthritis. Like many other reviewers, I did not want to order something messy and water-filled or electric for safety reasons and for ease when we travel. I also wanted to mention that I believe the other reviews about the covering of the product may be outdated; the cover on ours is not fabric and has yet to display any wear and tear. You may want to order a size up--my Golden strategically positions himself on the Large, but he'd probably fit better on Extra-Large.

I was excited for this product to work as well as it claims. When I travel with my dog, she gets hot inside her carrying bag, so I thought this would be great to put in the bottom of the bag to keep her cool. However, this mat really doesn't get cool on its own at all. The cooling function is supposed to be weight activated, but I couldn't feel any temperature change after she had sat on it for an hour.

I was also looking for something cold for her to lie on in my apartment. Honestly the tile floors in my kitchen stay cooler longer than this mat.

The mat's only redeeming quality is that it does get quite cold and stay that way for a few hours if I put it in the fridge or freezer beforehand. I'll probably just use it that way from now on. Not a total waste, but not anywhere near as good as this product claims to be.
