Dogit Design Alfresco Outdoor Drinking Fountain

Dogit Design Alfresco Outdoor Drinking FountainWe had been searching for an outdoor drinking solution for our two big dogs, and they both love this fountain. Part of our issue is that we live in south central Texas, where it gets blazingly hot outside, and the design of this fountain keeps the water at a relatively cool drinking temperature even in the heat of summer. The large capacity means there is a lot of water there, such that the temperature stays pretty consistent, and the walls are relatively thick, providing insulation as well.

Also, the pump moves the water, letting it aerate and dissipate heat as well. And the light under the center white tower is pleasing and makes it look like an architectural accent at night.

All in all, a great outdoor dog fountain.

UPDATE: after about 10 months, the pump stopped working on my unit. I called the company (Hagen), and they immediately answered and provided clear and simple instructions for cleaning the pump, which involves popping off the exterior cover, the interior cover, removing the impeller, and cleaning/rinsing the whole shebang in the sink, using Q-Tips to clean the insides. Once I did that and put it back together, it went back to working perfectly. The entire process of cleaning takes about 5 minutes, and is very simple, no tools needed other than the swaps to reach into the inside to clean it out. Note that the entire process is also described in the manual, which I had not kept.

I was very impressed with their support, and they also volunteered that the unit had a 2 year warranty, so if I couldn't get it working again they would send a new pump right out. It's nice to find a company that has qualified people answering the phone who go out of their way to help you, and also make sure you know the unit is still under warranty...outstanding.

I opened a dog daycare and boarding facility almost two years ago, and this water fountain is one of the best purchases I have made. In the large-dog area, every other method of watering was a dismal failure. The big dogs either played in the water -which made a huge mess, kept the water dirty, and was wasteful -or they knocked over and destroyed whatever watering device we tried. This fountain is refilled and the filter replaced all from the top, and there is no "dish" of water for the dogs to play in. The dogs drink from the fountain, and the water is ALWAYS clean. We placed it in a large planter and surrounded it with some large rocks, which is attractive and even the BIGGEST dog can't budge it! We have up to 15 large dogs drinking from it daily, and it has held up great for MONTHS now. My only regret is that Hagen doesn't make one just like it in a smaller size for the little dogs. Great product!

I LOVE THIS FOUNTAIN!!!

I use it indoors. I've tried several automatic water bowls for my dogs and none of them have worked. All of the filters clogged from dog slobber and food. I was constantly washing out and refilling their water bowls.

With the fountain, the filter catches all of the food and hair at the top, keeping it from getting into the water at the bottom, I just have to take the filer off and rinse it every other day. It holds a ton of water so I don't have to constantly refill it.

I have a Doberman and a Mastiff and this fountain works for them. It took one of them a few hours to drink from it but they both love it now.

I highly recommend this for homes with large dogs.

I was really excited about this fountain and it eliminating the need for me to constantly refill a bowl for my 2 dogs. Looks great but the corner was broken upon arrival. I figured I would hide that corner towards the wall, no big deal. This fountain is big and carrying it to the sink is not an easy task and I find that I have to do this ALL THE TIME to clean it. This fountain gets dirty and nasty quick and I dont understand why because it is inside my house and my 2 dogs are not very messy. I have written the company and they are not helpful at all. They talk about switching out the filter weekly and weekly cleanings. Well I am already cleaning it weekly and cannot afford to keep buying filters that don't seem to be working. Water gets green and smelly and I worry about my dogs drinking out of it. Filtration on this system just doesnt work properly :(

I have waited to write this review because several people said it was great but didn't last and I wanted to have it for a while to figure out the longevity. Also, you may need to teach your dogs to drink from it (not hard to do), my dogs preferred the bowl, but when I brought them over they eventually started drinking out of it. I am not sure if they were unsure because it was new, because it had some smell that wasn't pleasant to them (for example the charcoal), but they quickly adapted.

First the things I love:

1. It holds a lot of water, I still have to fill it up daily or every other day at the longest, but I have 2 german shepherds, so I expected that.

2. It is a nice design and looks good, especially with the light that makes the center white block glow, it looks great at night.

3. The cord is very long allowing an easy placement of the fountain.

4. The pump is quiet, you don't really hear the pump.

The few things that hold it from 5 stars:

1. While not awful, I think the design could have been thought through, for example, a finer filter at the bottom to keep the charcoal from going into the base. As it is the charcoal gets into the base eventually, which isn't a huge deal but could have been better.

2. Maybe this was just my unit but the plastic tube isn't quite long enough for the pump to read the bottom, which means you need to fill it up more often (or buy a new tube)

Now the most important thing, is that people were saying that their pumps didn't last, I have now had this for about 9 months and I have had absolutely no problems with the pump. I suspect that the people that are having issues, aren't refilling the water often enough, when the pump isn't submerged it will eventually burn itself out.

All in all a great product, and I plan on getting another so I have 1 inside and outside.
