Sherpa Original Deluxe Pet Carrier, Medium, Black

I've had the medium-sized Sherpa bag for two years and I am very happy with it. My 12 pound cat fits well in this carrier and even has room to turn around. Also, kitty never overheats in there because it is well-ventilated.

For air travel:

All of the openings are zippered so there is no chance of a mid-flight, stealth cat escape (if you've traveled with a cat, you know what I mean.) It's easy to carry and I have never had trouble getting it on an airplane, though, it does stick out from under the seat a bit. Normally, it is my only carry-on because it has enough room in the extra zippered pockets for my wallet, tickets, a small towel, magazines and a book.

I have three of these for my three felines. Everyone in our family (cats and human parents) likes these bags. I can line up three of these bags in the second seat of my Suburban and seat belt everyone in for trips to the veterinarian.

I like that the cats feel secure in the bags. Be warned if you have intelligent animals you might want to tie the zippers together. One of my little Einstein's figured out how to use a claw to unzip the bag. We now use twist ties to secure the zippers. The zip ties work like a charm. Now the cats are securely in the bag.

The removable fleece-like pad is also nice in case the animal get scared, it is washable. For storage the bags fold flat and don't take up much room. When you are juggling luggage and cats the shoulder strap is quite handy.

We liked our bags so much that we recommend them to our brother-in-law for his poodle. He works for an airline and his dog flies in this bag with no problem. Please note, this bag is only suitable for in the aircraft, not in cargo.

If you travel with your pets I highly recommend this product. Out family has been very pleased with the purchases.

I used this carrier to fly from the US to Italy and it worked great the entire time.

I also used it to take the cat to the vet prior and the cat peed a little, but the bottom white part was removable and I was able to wash it. I was worried that he would refuse to go in it after that but I had no problems. My other cat would love to sleep in there so I should have no problems when I go get her.

The carrier fit under the plane seat for US Airways Express and one of my Luthansa flights, but it didn't fit for the other flight. No fault of the carrier though, the seats had a huge spot for the life vets in that airplane. I was able to put the carrier slightly under the seat and just put my legs around it. No one said anything to me about it though, so I didn't mind.

I think that my cat liked that it was a dark carrier because he felt more secure with all the noise (airport and airplane). He only meowed when we were descending so I think he slept most of the flight in it. I think it's a very comfortable carrier for the cat. The padding on the bottom is pretty thick and seems comfortable.

Most people couldn't even tell I had a cat in there until I told them at security.

Unrelated to the carrier itself, but may be useful to you: At 2 airports I was allowed to use a private screening room so that the cat would not escape when they ran the bag through the x-ray (the cat cannot go through an x-ray), so you should definitely ask about that. It made me much happier than if I had to carry him through the metal detector.

Also, I like the fact that the bottom is smooth enough for me to drag the carrier. When we were going through a long security line, it was useful because I could pull him a little when the lined moved versus carrying it. He weighs 12 lbs so it was a nice little break on my shoulders. There was no damage to the carrier after doing this so it seems pretty durable.

I will definitely be using this carrier again, possibly buying a new one for my other cat (just because they get a little finicky when another cat's scent is all over it). The one I have would still work great though. My cat did scratch at it, but I see no damage from it.

I definitely recommend this to any one looking for a carrier for an airplane. Just allow your cat to get used to it before you travel so that the cat is calm.

Edited to add:

I used the same carrier with my other cat and had no problems with it at all. One thing that I found useful was that the top was able to be pressed down a little so I was able to get it under the seat. The second cat is smaller so that was fine with her. Since it was a long flight, I'd recommend asking for a blanket to put on top of the carrier... some cats do better when they can't see what's going on. Another thing I wish I had was maybe a small cup to put some ice or water in towards the end because she looked like she was getting a bit dehydrated.

I must say, I was willing to pay this amount because I thought I was getting a better quality item. After a only a few weeks, this bag caved in and my puppy would no longer go into it. I tried several times and ways to fix it, but it would not stay up.

I contacted the company and they told me to "stuff it with wet towels and spray it heavily with starch..." are they kidding? Then I found a reference to this problem under their web site FAQ's. So, they are knowingly selling a defective item and expecting the customer to then fix it. They never responded to my second email... I could not return it because it had been used.

This is a company that does NOT stand behind it's products. I found a much less expensive one at target, and it works much better!
