I would recommend this scratching post to people who are not sure what their cat likes. It features soft but sturdy and close-knit carpet surface both horizontal and vertical, a rope part and a toy hanging from an elastic band. The toy is a little bit big and heavy for a cat toy, but he seems to like it. The construction was very easy to assemble and stable. As opposed to what it might look like in the picture, the vertical and horizontal carpet surfaces are of the same color. A great purchase!I had to return it because where the post attached to the base it was very wobbly and i couldn't see how to tighten it. Also at the base the plywood or whatever it was made of was coming apart in pieces. Was disappointed.

I have owned my cat for about a year and a half and until recently, she was content using a sisal scratching mat. She used to scratch on my stuffed Laura Ashley chair. When I discovered she had torn the fabric in several places, I bought a thick plastic chair cover. I guess my cat wasn't happy about this because then she started to scratch on other things. I realized she needs to scratch on something both vertically and horizontally. So I started to research scratching posts. I looked at several different posts on Amazon, Petco, and Petsmart, and I read all the reviews I could find for the posts I liked. I wanted the post to be made of sisal because it lasts longer than carpet. Also, I didn't want to pay more than $30 which to me, is still too much. Finally, I decided to try the Majestic Pet Scratch Post. I was extremely fortunate to find one "Like New" sold by Amazon Warehouse Deals. It was unused but repackaged, so it only cost about $18.
I waited to write a review to see how well this product works after my cat has been scratching on it for awhile. First, the assembly was so easy and took less than two minutes. Second, this scratching post weighs 9 lbs. All of the other posts I considered weigh less than 5 lbs. The diameter of the post is 4 inches, which is a bit thicker than others. Once it is attached to the base, the post remains firmly in place. I'm sure I'll have to tighten the bolt once in awhile, but that's to be expected. The sisal rope is thick, as is the carpet. However, the base isn't light beige as shown in the photo. It is dark taupe, which I think is prettier with the dark brown carpet on the post. I read reviews of other posts which said the sisal rope and/or carpet came apart very soon after purchase, but everything on this one is still intact.
After spraying the post and base with catnip, my cat was drawn to it and immediately starting scratching on both the sisal and carpet. She uses it several times a day and has stopped scratching on other things in my home. The attached "toy" doesn't interest her at all, but I couldn't less It's a somewhat large block of carpeted wood, and she doesn't like big toys. But if a cat does play with it, the elastic cord is thick, so I imagine the toy wouldn't come off easily. My cat is full grown and only weighs 8 lbs, so she probably would not knock the post over. To be safe, I put a piece of furniture on one side of the base.
The only flaw I have found is that THIS SCRATCHING POST IS NOT 24 INCHES TALL. The post itself is about 22 1/4 inches, and the base is 1 inch thick. Perhaps Majestic Pet is rounding up, I don't know. But I can say for certain that when my cat has worn out this post, I hope it is still being manufactured because I will buy another.Assembly was simple. It is a very sturdy and well made product.. I like this scratching post, but it is taking a while for my cat to start using it. He will scratch on the base, but he doesn'r seem to like the post part. I think it is because the whole unit moves when he scratches. If the base were heavier, it would be perfect.
