Petstages Orka Chew

Petstages Orka ChewI HIGHLY recommend this toy for medium to large dogs that are light to medium chewers. It is a ton of fun to play chase or fetch games with and most dogs really like the texture for chewing. But be warned. No matter what the package says, THIS IS NOT A TOY FOR STRONG CHEWERS!!!

My Australian Cattle Dog LOVES the Orka Jack Chew, but she loves it a little too much and ends up destroying it. She will meticulously chew off one leg at a time. It is amazing to watch. But the product is borderline pricy for something that is destroyed (all 6 legs removed) in less than 2 weeks. Also, I worry about her health as many small pieces are swallowed no matter how close I watch her with the toy.

This toy is AWESOME for chase or fetch. It bounces like crazy and floats. But the dog prefers to chew this toy, so the human ends up doing most of the running and fetching to keep the toy in one piece. We have lots of other toys that fit the "fetch" category which I don't have to watch like a hawlk. So now that two which we bought are dead and gone, we will not be repurchasing this toy.

Toys that pass the ACD chew test:

Kong (we still use the Red, have not had to upgrade to Black yet)

LARGE sized Nylabone for Heavy chewers

Fresh moose antlers

chuck it balls (but these are always getting lost)

Pickle Pocket

Toys we thought would work that failed:

Kong Frisbee (died in 5 minutes of fetch)

Kyjen Fire Hose (died in 5 minutes of fetch/chew)

Orka Chew (died in 2 hours of chew, GREAT for fetch but dog prefers this toy for chew)

West Paw Bumi (died in 5 minutes of chew, GREAT for fetch and tug)

PawTrack (dogs just don't like chewing it, loved shredding the rope)

Any Rope toy is shredded into a mess in minutes (OK for tug, but still gets messy)

This toy is great; our dog loves it. It bounces all over in an unpredictable way, which is very fun to watch him chase all over the house, sliding around trying to catch it. We've had better luck with they toy lasting than the other reviewer. Our dog is a 70 lb. black lab/border collie mix. He has not destroyed this or even made a dent in. If you have a moderate to heavy chewing dog, you will be safe with this toy.

My dog (a Great Dane mix) isn't the smartest guy on the block, but he loves food! At first, we gave him the Kong GeniusKONG Genius Leo Dog Toy, Extra Large (Colors vary) and he loved it, but got a few chunks of the rubber off in the first hour (and he's not an aggressive chewer). I bought this since it said it was for "power chewers" and so far it's still in one piece!

I am only giving it four stars because the one hole goes all the way through the toy, and that isn't much of a challenge since the treats don't have to go around any corners. I put his daily dentabone in the blocked ends and put a variety of treats in the hole that goes all the way through. This seems to keep him busy, but like I said ... he isn't the smartest guy on the block :) If your dog is a smarty, this probably isn't the best toy for you, but if your dog enjoys treats, go for it!

We've bought 3 of these so far. Our cattle dog loves to play with this toy. The only problem is that he is a serious chewer and this toy just doesn't survive for as long as our other purchases (just for reference, our ACD weighs 44 lbs. and is 1.5 years old). Even though we have to keep his play with this toy to short intervals, and even though it doesn't hold up to his focused chewing, we still think it's a great product. It's softer than some of the more durable toys we have in the house, so it doesn't scuff the floor or floorboards as much. If you have a less aggressive chewer this is probably a solid 4-5 star product. It can be cleaned after outside play and the company has a good track record (as far as we are able to find out in our brief research).

Pros: Fun shape makes for bouncy, varied play. Shape stimulates our dogs gums. Softer texture means less scuffs in the house.

Cons: For our serious chewer this isn't very durable. He works off about one nub a day, and then we put the toy away for a while. He loves to play with it down to the last scrap, but obviously his play has to be supervised at that point. Our dog loves to bite pieces off but he always spits them out in a pile next to his bed...but if your dog swallows pieces this could be a real worry.

We'll keep buying this product and a few other Orka offerings because we like the company and the toys entertain our pooch for as long as they last. Hopefully our ACD will relax his chewing as he gets older and then he'll be able to enjoy this toy much longer.

The dog is a 27 lbs. high-energy basenji-mix dog, the cat is an 18 lbs. orally fixated feline.

The dog ate the Kong, the cat no longer eats electrical cords.

Definitely recommend for small dogs. The cat is getting it's teeth through the material, but hasn't gotten through it... yet.
