Because this has a BIG top shelf, and a pretty large middle shelf, too. Our cat is over 20 pounds (long and tall, not just fat) and too large and heavy for most of the inexpensive condos out there. This one is a perfect fit, and he loves lounging in it well above the ground.It arrived fully assembled. The construction is very sturdy (important for a large cat) and the materials are good. It could really use sisal rope instead of carpet on all the uprights (instead of just one) because the carpet doesn't hold up well to the scratching. That's why it's only 4 stars instead of a perfect 5.
