JW Pet Company Magneticat Cat Toy

JW Pet Company Magneticat Cat ToyI had my doubts when I picked this up, but our precocious, sociable 2-y.o. male cat LOVES this. The magnetic action got his interest to start, but the toy has kept his interest -even when the (thick, coated) wire holding the toy has been bent so much that the 'bug' isn't close enough for the magnet to affect it.

Sometimes he plays "tether ball," bouncing the bug with his face. Sometimes he just swats at it. Sometimes he takes a flying leap or challenges himself by running under the yellow rod really fast. Sometimes he just sits and cuddles with it. It seemed to me that he felt the bug was a living thing because of the way it trembled or changed direction (subtly) in its slowest movements.

I have been impressed with the sturdiness of the plastic base. Unlike numerous other "play-by-yourself" toys for cats we have tried (including battery operated ones), it is not knocked over easily and has not broken. The only parts showing wear are the metal rod holding the toy (which we've bent back into shape many times now) and the plastic attachment to the ladybug toy (which our cat has chewed on.

I generally don't like to buy toys made in China. I made an exception here, as the toy seems more durable than most. The fabric of the toy is tough, not flimsy, maybe to ensure the cat will be unlikely to expose the magnet within.

For the right cat, this is an excellent toy. I will be getting a spare or two.

This is a house with 6 cats, but only two of them got a chance at it. The base is well constructed, but I can't get the two pieces to snap together. They'll connect at a 90 degree angle just fine, but not lying flat like they should. Magnetic action was just as advertised. The base is sturdy plastic and the rod is nice, firm metal. I can see needing to bend it back down, but that doesn't bother me. The problem is the bug was off and being chased around in another room within 15 minutes. The string is apparently extremely tasty, as they got through it so fast. I think it was the 11-year-old cat that got it off. Currently have it on the counter until I can get new cord for it in the morning. Great potential but an important aspect was overlooked.

My SIL's cat wouldn't touch the thing (10+ years). My five month old kitten, Lizzy, went bat bleep insane with it. I hadn't managed to snap the base together completely and she had it in two pieces in 10 minutes. She dragged it across the room and played with the bug half. Turns out, the magnet's in the bug and it kept sticking to the legs of the metal craft stool. Hilarious. I got the base snapped back together properly, and she's loving the thing. My older cat Slick (17), spends a lot of time watching the kitten with a "Is that thing nuts?" look on his face. But he's been known to walk over to her toys that he previously snubbed and swatting them around when no one's looking. I caught the old fart playing with the bug last night. I imagine in a year or so, I'll be packing this thing off to the Humane Society where new kittens can enjoy it. It definitely seems kittenish.

This is a really great toy, as it doesn't need any batteries to get it moving.

The only problem I'm having is that my cat is too big and doesn't really notice the dancing bug on the end... he just tries to chew the string.

I think if you have a kitten or small cat then this will be a fantastic toy to keep them amused for hours, it's just not high enough for bigger cats.

Still happy I bought it though... I'm trying to figure out if I can mount it on a stand of some sort to get my cat interested in the toy.

Scruffy, aka "Dr. Destructo" loves this thing but within minutes had completely bent the rod down to floor level. We have to keep adjusting, re-bending it. It would have been better it it has been some type of spring, etc, for an arm and not and easy-to-bend attachment.
