The material is not carpet, but a kind of plush covering, but no matter as they use the many sisal posts to scratch on. The underlying material is a kind of particle board vs. plywood, which is great because you can staple lots of other hanging toys from different places.
My cats range in weight from 11-13 pounds and it is plenty big enough for them, including the perches.
The other reason I got this was for my 4th cat's health. She is a female rescue who has had ongoing lung problems; she was always hiding under beds and avoiding the males which complicated her condition, given that I have tile floors that are impossible to keep dust free. After seeing that new show "My Cat from Hell" I liked the advice about giving cats a high place to go. It worked. It took her several days, but she got used to the tree and is now on it, and off the ground, most of the time. She has, as in the TV show, become more relaxed, friendly, and approachable. She plays more, and now the stuff in her lungs is clearly loose and getting coughed up. The best part is that for the first time since she was a kitten she has started purring again.
I cannot say enough what this silly tree did for all my cats' morale and quality of life. I plan on buying a second one so they have a bigger area on which to hang out. and the toy mouse that it came with is STILL hanging on after being attacked repeatedly by all 4 cats! :)
Update: as of today, 9/30/11, the mouse is still attached despite massive abuse. One of the top towers got a bit wobbly from the cats'rough play, so an easy fix was to get a dowel, some washers and screws, and I just attached the dowel from the bottom of the perch into the deck near the post, and it shored up the perch. total cost was around $3 for materials and took less than five minutes. My cats love this thing.
Update: 1/6/12, stand is still going strong, mouse is still attached!
Disclaimer: no cats were harmed in the filming of this motion picture; a professional stunt double Tabby was used for the "fall from the tower" scene.I read all the mixed reviews on this product and was hesitant to order it. I'm glad I finally did. The furniture arrived 4 days after I ordered it. The box was not beat up as I have read in other reviews. All pieces were in the box as well. The directions were easy to understand. It took me about 45 minutes to complete the assembly. I had no trouble. I have read many reviews about the stairs not working. I had no issues attaching them. It is not at all wobbly either. If this company had these issues in the past they have corrected them. I did notice a faint odor but it smells like glue. It is not a strong odor, I believe it is from the sisal rope glued onto the posts. My cats didn't seem to be bothered by it. The furniture is not covered in carpeting but with a soft furry like fabric. It is quite nice and my cats immediatley started rubbing all over it. Overall I would highly recommend this product. I shopped around at all the local pet suppliers and online and compared prices and products and this furniture is well worth the money spent.

I bought this cat tree in Aug 2010 for our three cats. They love this thing and sleep on it all the time. They run up and down the platforms and hang onto the posts. The hanging toys only lasted a few months because the cats chewed the strings to get the toys loose. This has been a great purchase. The cloth material and the posts are all holding up great. I was concerned the cloth wouldn't wear as well as carpeted trees but there are no tears or bare spots anywhere after a year and half of rough-housing. The cat hair does accumulate in the corners of the platforms but I can get it out with a brush and vacuum. It still looks like new after a good vacuuming.
My wife and I adopted two more kittens this past year and they have also taken up residence on it. We do have this in a corner because the cats run and jump onto it so much but I do not think they could tip it over even when they hit it mid height from a leap off the sofa.
I had no trouble assembling this. The stairs didn't sit flat at first but they have since relaxed from all the cat traffic. I made sure everything was tightened well and evenly during assembly. I have only had to tighten one of the bolts in the past year.
I highly recommend this cat tree especially for the price. I would definitely buy this again.

The product is great. It's very easy to put together and very sturdy (although the upper platforms are a little shaky, it has no problem holding my 9 and 14 lb cats). The only reason I've rated this as a 4 instead of a 5 is because of the material. I have another cat tree that I bought two years ago when I first got my cats, and the ENTIRE thing is covered in this awesome material that is basically like carpet. It allows the cats to really dig their claws into the material and climb all over the entire thing. This product is more like cloth on top of slippery thin wood, so except for the white posts, the cats cannot dig their claws into the material, effectively limiting how they play on the product.
I'm glad I purchased it though; I've kept my old cat tree, and the cats love them both.

One platform was broken. The fur covering was not tacked down on one of the boxes correctly and had to be repaired. It's an odd yellowish color(buttercream), not biege. I thought that buying a bigger tower would give more room for them to lay, but the "floor plan" had to be altered to make room. The upper platforms are very small and my cats have to be curled tight to sleep there. We did not install the ramps, didn't see the point...maybe if you have kittens. That said... for petite cats, it would be ok. It is a good value compaired to other towers, it is sturdy and my cats do climb/sleep on it.
