you pull the string on the tail of the little critter, and the recoil action sets off a spinning thing inside that makes the critter vibrate. the string is not very long (6-7 inches), and recoils fairly quickly, so the vibration only lasts about two seconds or so.
for mousie, this is not long enough to engage her cautious interest. i did find if you hold the critter sideways or upside down, the vibration may make it scoot along the floor -again, not very far or for very long. it vibrates nicely under newspaper or in a bag, but having to reach in and manipulate the string sort of spoils the surprise.
safety: this is a pretty sturdy toy without too much hanging off it. the string recoils inside the body and doesn't hang out. the end of the string is secured by a little plastic button, which may conceivably be chewed off and swallowed. Both of my little Yorkies love to pull the tail on these mice, but after a year or so they get the stuffing coming out as they pull the tail, so they have to be replaced. I try to keep some on hand, in case they stop making them, like they did the battery-operated hard-plastic mouse that moved and made noise.
